How to Choose the Right Books for Your Child

Age, interests and the way a story is told matter more than the number of pages.
A good children’s book is one that your child wants to open again and again.
Think about age. Young children enjoy short stories, large clear pictures and simple repeated phrases. As they grow, longer stories, chapter books and books about real topics become more interesting.
Follow their interests. A child who loves animals, space or cars will read more if the books are about those subjects. Interest is a stronger motivation than any reward.
Look inside before you buy. Check that the text size is comfortable, the language is clear and the pictures are pleasant. A book that is too difficult can put a child off reading.
Read together. Reading aloud, even for a few minutes, builds a love of books and helps with vocabulary. Let your child choose some of the books themselves.
Mix stories with other kinds of books, such as activity books, picture dictionaries and simple science books.
If you are unsure, tell us your child’s age and what they like, and we will help you choose.
