How to Take Care of Your Books

Simple habits that keep pages, covers and spines in good condition for years.

Books last a very long time when they are treated gently.

Keep them dry. Moisture is the biggest enemy of paper because it causes stains and mould. Avoid bathrooms, damp basements and places near leaking pipes or windows.

Avoid direct sunlight. Strong light fades covers and makes paper yellow. A shelf away from the window is ideal.

Shelve them properly. Stand books upright, neither too loose nor too tight, and lay very large or heavy books flat so their spines do not bend.

Handle with clean, dry hands. Do not fold the corners of pages. Use a bookmark instead, and do not leave a book open face down for a long time, because this can weaken the spine.

Dust gently. A soft dry cloth or brush is enough, and a little air circulation around the shelves helps prevent mustiness.

Cover new books you carry every day, or keep them in a bag with a separate pocket, to protect the edges.
